How to make a 10-foot Cake - The Recipes, the math, the process
When I say baking projects, this is what I mean by baking *projects*
Post-grad I started feeling more responsible, so I decided I need to make something big, or stupid, or perhaps stupid big. So I had this thought to make a really long cake. A cake long enough that I could lay down next to it.
I missed baking for other people. In part, this idea was fueled by the Internet’s obsession with large sized foods. I too wanted to dip my toe and witness something large for the sake of being large. But also, since graduating
I kept this idea in my back pocket for months, jokingly telling people that I wanted to make something huge. So when Beacons approached me to host a creator event for them, I agreed on the condition that I could make my cake baking dreams come true. I I wanted to be ambitious but honestly I wasn’t really thinking about the logistics of making something 10 feet long until they decided to heavily advertise that that was the case. So now, I was locked in to baking this monstrosity, so here’s how I went about planning it.

The Math and the Cake Flavors:
So I decided to make the cake by combining half sheet trays and laying them side by side. Each half sheet tray is 13” x 18” which means to get to 10 feet (120 inches) we’ll need a little over 6 half sheet trays of length, so I rounded up to 7 (she can’t be shorter than 10 feet). I’ll stack the 3 layers of cake on top of one another with 2 layers of filling in between. To add more variety and to encourage people to eat more cake I decided on three flavors.
Considering how much surface area this cake had, I knew it would be a challenge to decorate, so I just decided to not decorate it at all! To make the cake the center of the party, the Beacons team and I purchased a ton of decorations to so that way guests could decorate the cake themselves and so that way I didn’t have to do extra planning. Don’t worry, we also bought gloves so that way it was a bit more sanitary.
So in total I’ll be making 21 batches of cake, and three different flavor combos…
Red Velvet Cake
Brown Butter Cream Cheese Frosting
Red Fruit Jam
Funfetti Cake
Vanilla Mousseline filling
Funfetti cookie crumbles
Chocolate cake
Whipped malted chocolate ganache
Biscoff cookie crumbles
Then we’re going to cover the entire thing in buttercream icing so it looks like one continuous cake.
So this is the monstrosity of a task I’ve made for myself.
